GI Tag Hearing at Jammu University

The Directorate of Handicrafts & Handloom, Jammu under the guidance of  Principal Secretary to the Government, Industries & Commerce Department, J&K for the first time facilitated the Round Table meeting of  Artisans/Weavers of Jammu Division with the team of Geographical Indication Registration fromthe Office of Controller General of Patent, Designs and Trademarks, Govt. of India through NABARD/Human Welfare Association Varanasi at University of Jammu. Artisans/Weavers of Jammu division presented Basohli Pashmina and Rajouri Chikri wood products at the Round Table meeting. Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom Jammu guided the artisans / weavers to present their case for the G.I registration of the said products.
Directorate of Handicrafts & Handloom, Jammu with the help of NABARD took the initiative for Geographical Registration of Basohli Paintings, Basohli Pashmina and Rajouri Chikri Wood products and out of these, G.I registration for Basohli Painting has already been approved by the Ministry of Commerce & Industries, Government of India. The initiative is a first of its kind in the handicrafts and handloom sector in the Jammu region as hitherto no products from the region in the said sector has been G.I registered. G.I Registration and tagging of these products would help the artisans and weavers of Jammu region to earn good price for their product. This will also consolidate the position of artisans and weavers of Jammu region at export front and would ultimately improve the socio-economic status of the artisan and weaver community.
